Flooring Installation in Hancock County, Indiana

Hancock County runs from historic Greenfield to the fast-growing western edge. The flooring job is genuinely different depending on where you are.

· 6 min read

Hancock County sits directly east of Marion County, and the housing splits sharply. Greenfield and the older towns along the National Road have pre-war homes with real subfloor history. The western edge around McCordsville and Fortville is filling in with new construction. Those are two different flooring jobs.

Where we work in Hancock County

Greenfield, New Palestine, Fortville, McCordsville and the Cumberland area on the county line. Our shop is in Franklin Township on the southeast side of Indianapolis, which puts most of Hancock County inside a straightforward drive rather than an outlying trip.

That keeps measure appointments and start dates quick, and it means travel is not quietly built into the quote.

Greenfield and the older housing stock

Greenfield grew up along the old National Road - now US-40 - and the historic core has homes that predate the Second World War. Queen Anne, Colonial Revival and Craftsman houses that have been lived in continuously for a century.

Older homes reward careful prep and punish rushing it. What we typically find is subfloor that has been built up in layers by successive owners, room-to-room transitions sitting at different heights, and trim profiles that new stock will not match without cutting to fit. None of that is a problem, but all of it has to be in the quote rather than discovered on install day.

The genuinely good find in these houses is original hardwood under carpet. It happens often enough to be worth checking before you commit to new material, because refinishing an existing floor is frequently both cheaper and a better result than covering it. We look for it during the measure.

McCordsville, Fortville and the newer builds

The western side of the county has been absorbing growth from Indianapolis and Hamilton County, and the housing there is recent. The most common project is replacing builder-grade flooring specified to hit a price point - thin carpet worn through in the traffic lanes, entry-level vinyl, laminate showing wear at the seams.

These jobs are predictable in a way older homes are not. The subfloor is usually flat and sound, there is nothing unexpected behind the baseboards, and the work moves quickly. The decisions are about material and layout rather than problem-solving.

One thing to know about newer construction: many of these homes are slab-on-grade or have substantial slab areas, and a concrete slab passes moisture vapour upward from the ground continuously. That rules out solid hardwood in those rooms. Engineered hardwood gives you a real wood surface that handles a slab, and luxury vinyl plank is the waterproof alternative.

What we install across the county

The same core range applies everywhere. Hardwood flooring where you want a floor that can be refinished decades from now. Engineered hardwood for slabs, basements and rooms with real humidity movement. Luxury vinyl plank as the waterproof workhorse for kitchens, baths, mudrooms and busy family space. Waterproof laminate for hard-wearing surface at lower cost. Carpet for bedrooms, stairs and media rooms.

Most homes end up with two or three of these rather than one product throughout. That is usually both the better result and the better value.

Indiana seasons are part of the specification

Central Indiana swings from humid summers to dry heated winters, and wood responds by expanding and contracting across the year. It is why acclimating material inside the home before installation is not optional here, and why engineered hardwood is often the more practical specification than solid in rooms that see real humidity variation.

Getting an actual number

We measure in person rather than quoting over the phone, because subfloor condition, transitions, stairs and tear-out are what move the price - not square footage alone. The free in-home design consultation covers measuring, samples in your own light, and a written quote you can compare against anything else you have been given.

Frequently asked questions

Do you install flooring throughout Hancock County?
Yes - Greenfield, New Palestine, Fortville, McCordsville and the Cumberland area. Our shop is on the southeast side of Indianapolis, so Hancock County is a straightforward drive rather than an outlying trip, which keeps measure appointments and start dates quick.
What should I expect in an older Greenfield home?
Usually layered subfloor from previous flooring, transitions between rooms sitting at different heights, and trim that has to be cut to match rather than bought off the shelf. All manageable, but it needs to be planned for rather than found on install day - which is why we open things up during the measure.
Can I install solid hardwood in a newer McCordsville home?
It depends on the subfloor. Many newer builds are slab-on-grade or have significant slab areas, and solid hardwood is generally not recommended directly over concrete because slabs pass moisture vapour upward continuously. Engineered hardwood gives you a genuine wood surface that handles slab installation, and luxury vinyl plank is the waterproof alternative.
Might there be hardwood under my carpet?
In the older Greenfield housing stock it turns up more often than people expect. Refinishing an original floor is frequently cheaper and a better result than covering it with new material, so it is worth checking before committing. We look for it during the measure.
