LVP and Laminate Installation in Indianapolis

Luxury vinyl plank is vinyl through and through. There is no wood in it, which is why it is genuinely waterproof rather than water-resistant - standing water will not swell it, because there is nothing in the core to absorb.

Waterproof laminate has a wood-composite core with a sealed surface and treated edges. The wear layer on a good laminate is harder than most LVP wear layers, so it takes scratches better. But the core is still wood-based, which means prolonged standing water is a different proposition than it is with vinyl.

That single difference drives most of the room-by-room decisions.

Kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, mudrooms, basements and finished slabs. Anywhere a leak is a question of when rather than if.

It is also the right answer for main floors in households with dogs and young children. The wear layer handles claws and dropped toys, spills wipe up without a timer running, and a quality plank over proper underlayment is quiet underfoot rather than hollow.

Basements in particular are an LVP job in Indianapolis. Below-grade space here deals with slab moisture and the occasional spring water event, and vinyl is the material that shrugs both off.

Hallways, kids rooms, bedrooms, home offices and high-traffic main floors that stay dry. Anywhere abrasion is the enemy rather than water.

The premium laminate lines use an AC4 or AC5 commercial-grade wear layer - the same rating specified for retail floors - paired with embossed-in-register texture, where the surface grain lines up exactly with the printed grain underneath. From standing height it reads as real wood.

It is also the most cost-effective wood-look floor we install, which matters when you are covering a whole main level rather than one room.

Both products are floating installs, and floating floors fail in predictable ways when the prep is skipped.

The first is the expansion gap. Click-lock flooring has to be able to move seasonally, and Indianapolis gives it plenty of reason to - humid summers, dry heated winters. A floor installed tight to the walls will peak and lift when it expands, and the fix is pulling it apart rather than adjusting it.

The second is the subfloor. Floating floors telegraph whatever is underneath them. A slab that is out of level or a subfloor with high spots produces hollow-sounding areas and seams that work loose over time. We laser-level and fill before the first plank goes down, because there is no fixing it afterwards.

The third is racking. Pulling planks from three or four boxes at once avoids repeating the printed pattern in a visible run. Install straight out of one box at a time and you get an obvious repeat down the middle of the room, which cannot be unseen once you notice it.

Old flooring comes up and gets disposed of. The subfloor is checked for level and moisture, and prepped where it needs it. Material acclimates inside the home. Underlayment or moisture barrier goes down where the product does not have it attached. Planks are racked and installed with expansion gaps at every wall and vertical. Then transitions, quarter-round and trim.

A single room is typically a day. A main floor is longer, and the tear-out and prep are what actually determine the schedule rather than the install itself.

If the room gets wet, LVP. If the room stays dry and takes heavy foot traffic, laminate gives you a harder wear surface for less money. Most Indianapolis homes we work in use both - LVP through the kitchen, baths and mudroom, laminate or hardwood through the living space, carpet in the bedrooms.

Running one product through the entire house is usually neither the best result nor the best value.
