Flooring Services in Castleton and Northeast Indianapolis

Castleton and the northeast side have a distinct housing stock - mostly built between the 1960s and 90s, and mostly on its second or third floor by now.

· 6 min read

Castleton sits on the northeast side of Indianapolis in Lawrence Township, built out largely around the retail corridor at the I-465 and I-69 interchange. The housing here is mostly late-twentieth-century, which gives it a fairly consistent set of flooring conditions - and one recurring opportunity worth knowing about.

The northeast-side housing stock

Most of Castleton and the surrounding northeast neighbourhoods filled in between the 1960s and the 1990s, following the commercial growth around Castleton Square and the interstate interchange. That means solid, conventionally framed houses with plywood or OSB subfloors over crawl space or basement, plus a good number of split-levels and ranches.

By now these homes are typically on their second or third floor covering. The original carpet went years ago, and what is down is often a 1990s or 2000s replacement that has reached the end of its life.

Check under the carpet first

In housing of this age and type, original hardwood under wall-to-wall carpet is common enough that it is worth looking before you buy anything. Carpeting over hardwood was standard practice for a long stretch, and the floor underneath is frequently in better condition than people expect precisely because it has been protected.

When it is there and it is sound, refinishing is usually both cheaper than new material and a better result. It is a genuinely good outcome and the reason we pull a corner during the measure rather than quoting blind.

Split-levels and transitions

The northeast side has a lot of split-level and multi-level homes, and the flooring question there is transitions - how the material changes at each half-flight, and whether the same floor runs through or the levels are treated separately.

Getting this wrong is what makes a house feel chopped up. Running one continuous material through the main levels and reserving carpet for bedrooms and the lower level usually reads better than changing product at every landing. Stair treads and risers are their own decision, and matching them to the adjoining floor rather than defaulting to carpet is often worth the difference.

Basements and lower levels

A lot of these homes have finished lower levels, and below-grade space in Marion County deals with slab moisture year-round. Solid hardwood does not belong down there.

Luxury vinyl plank is the standard answer - genuinely waterproof, comfortable underfoot over a proper underlayment, and unbothered by the humidity swing between a July basement and a January one. Engineered hardwood is the alternative when you want real wood over the slab. Carpet over a vapour barrier still works well for a lower-level media room.

Where we work on the northeast side

Castleton, Lawrence, Fort Harrison, Geist and the surrounding northeast Indianapolis neighbourhoods, plus Fishers immediately over the county line. It is a compact area to cover, which keeps measure appointments quick.

Getting a quote

We measure in person. In housing of this vintage the subfloor condition, the layered previous flooring, the transitions between levels and the stairs are what actually determine the price, and none of that can be assessed over the phone. The free in-home consultation includes measuring, samples in your own light, and a written itemised quote.

Frequently asked questions

Do you install flooring in Castleton?
Yes. We cover Castleton, Lawrence, Fort Harrison, Geist and the surrounding northeast Indianapolis neighbourhoods, along with Fishers just over the county line. It is a compact service area, so measure appointments and start dates stay quick.
Is there likely to be hardwood under my carpet?
In northeast-side homes built between the 1960s and 90s it is common. Carpeting over hardwood was standard practice for decades, and the floor underneath is often in better condition than expected because the carpet protected it. Refinishing is frequently cheaper and a better result than new material, so it is worth checking before you commit.
What flooring works in a finished basement?
Luxury vinyl plank is the usual answer. Below-grade space in Marion County deals with slab moisture year-round, and LVP is genuinely waterproof rather than water-resistant. Engineered hardwood works when you want real wood over a slab, and carpet over a vapour barrier is still good for a lower-level media room. Solid hardwood does not belong below grade.
Should the same floor run through every level of a split-level?
Usually running one continuous material through the main levels reads better than changing product at each landing, with carpet reserved for bedrooms and the lower level. Changing material at every half-flight is what makes a split-level feel chopped up. Stair treads are a separate decision worth making deliberately.
