The honest answer to "what does hardwood cost?" is: it depends on four things, and any company that quotes a firm price over the phone is guessing. Here is what actually drives the number for an Indianapolis home, so you can compare quotes apples to apples.
1. The material you choose
Solid hardwood, engineered hardwood, species (white oak, red oak, hickory, cherry, maple), plank width, and finish all change the per-square-foot material cost. A standard pre-finished oak costs less than a wide-plank designer line or a custom reclaimed floor, which runs on a longer build.
If budget is the main driver, it is worth comparing solid hardwood against engineered hardwood and luxury vinyl plank before you decide - each has a different price and a different best use.
2. Square footage (and the layout)
More area lowers the cost per square foot, but layout matters too: lots of closets, transitions, stairs, and angled cuts take more labor than one big open room of the same size. Staircases in particular are priced separately because each tread and riser is fit by hand.
3. Subfloor prep
This is the line item people forget. If the subfloor is uneven, squeaky, or has moisture, it has to be corrected before the new floor goes down - otherwise the finished floor telegraphs every flaw. Older homes around Indianapolis (think the historic districts in Franklin, Greenfield, or downtown Noblesville) often need more prep than a newer build in Fishers or Westfield.
4. Removal and the extras

- Why will nobody quote hardwood over the phone?
- Because the price depends on what is under the existing floor, how many transitions and stairs there are, and how much old material has to come up. None of that can be assessed remotely. An in-home measure is what turns a rough range into a number you can actually hold someone to.
- Is engineered hardwood cheaper than solid hardwood?
- Often, though the ranges overlap and a premium engineered line with a thick wear layer can cost more than entry-level solid. The more useful question is usually which one suits the subfloor - solid hardwood is generally not recommended directly over a concrete slab regardless of budget.
- Does the quote include removing my old floor?
- It should, and you should check. Tear-out, disposal, subfloor prep and trim are the items most often left off a quote to make the headline number look better. When two quotes are far apart, that difference is usually where it lives.
